“My work in ceramics is heavily influenced by my Chinese American heritage, revolving primarilyaround cultural identity and the homogenization of different Asian American experiences. I amdrawn to the traditional forms and methods I witnessed throughout my travels in Asia, but mygoal is to contemporize the surface using patterns. My work takes the 2-D language of textilesand transposes it into 3-D forms to create a new language through my own interpretation.Throughout my patterns, the viewer can see a common theme of an isolated element, mostoften a single red element amongst a sea of blue. I am injecting myself into the pattern throughthe single red element as my own experience as a Chinese American. In doing so, I am in turnexpressing my experience in this history of pattern.”
